Apple is fixing one of the biggest annoyances of Apple Maps on iOS 17. You can finally download maps for offline use, complete with turn-by-turn directions.
Google Maps has long offered the ability to download maps for offline use. This allows you to use the app for navigation even when not in network range.
Save maps for offline use in Apple Maps on iOS 17
Despite making several improvements over the years, Apple Maps has lacked the option to save maps for offline use. Once iOS 17 lands in September, this won’t be an issue. On iOS 17, you can download maps of a selected region or town on your iPhone for offline use. This includes turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling, or public transit.

The download size of offline maps will depend on the region you select. The bigger the area, the larger the download size, and vice versa. By default, Apple Maps will download offline maps over Wi-Fi, though you can also set it to download over mobile data. The app will automatically update the downloaded data periodically over Wi-Fi.
Apple Maps is gaining another handy feature on iOS 17
On offline maps, you can see the places of interest and other important information, like the operating hours and your estimated arrival time. However, you won’t get traffic updates as it requires internet access. You can also access the downloaded Apple Maps data on your paired Apple Watch. Do note that the watch itself cannot download maps for offline use, though. It will only load the data from the connected iPhone.
Apple Maps on iOS 17 also lets you view the real-time slot availability status in EV charging stations.
